Vietnamese youth show a high prevalence of anxiety, depression, and stress but have low access to mental health care and psychosocial support. Risk factors include pressure for academic success, bullying, gender roles, and isolation. The socioeconomic impact of COVID-19 will likely exacerbate these challenges. Life skills and social and emotional learning can support youth to navigate challenges that, if unaddressed, may lead to more serious mental health problems. Our proposal is to develop and pilot an innovative digital health intervention via an app that uses machine learning and empathetic AI to deliver tailored self-management support to youth at the population level. The app will also include screening for common mental disorders, suicide risk, and referrals to standard and emergency care as needed. The app will be co-designed with a Youth Advisory Council and piloted among youth aged 15-18 in Hanoi, Vietnam to understand whether it is acceptable and appropriate for Vietnamese youth and to assess whether a full-scale randomized trial is warranted.
